At present, up to six students have part-time jobs supporting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) while completing their graduate degrees. In their role, the students will respond directly to emails and postal mail submitted by the public and health care professionals to CDC-INFO, CDC’s National Contact Center staffed and operated by Vangent for CDC. CDC-INFO provides up-to-date health information round-the-clock via multiple channels. “These students will have an excellent opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job Public Health training to prepare them for their professional careers,” said Mac Curtis, President and CEO of Vangent. “They will interact with the public on a wide-range of health information topics through one of the world’s most recognized sources of credible information.” According to Dr. Patricia Rodney, Associate Dean for Public Health Education and Director of the MPH Program at Morehouse School of Medicine, “The MPH Program is excited about this new partnership. This on the job training experience will provide our students with unique opportunities to put theory into practice in a real world setting early in their academic career.” Established in 1995, the MPH Program incorporates a strong community component with public health agencies, non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations. This element enhances the student’s ability to become engaged in community-based participatory research, student-directed learning, problem solving, and the development of skills and competencies essential to the practice of public health. In 2007, the program earned the maximum seven-year re-accreditation period, and is currently accredited through December, 2014. CDC-INFO can be accessed 24 hours a day, every day through multiple channels: 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636), TTY: (888) 232-6348, or email at cdcinfo@cdc.gov.
