Vangent’s Health Information Exchange Framework

The Customer Challenge
Health professionals want to access “remote” healthcare data, in a single patient view, through the same application as their local data. Unfortunately, most existing electronic health record (EHR) systems lack this capability today. Healthcare delivery has long been hindered by patchy, disconnected data and has a long way to go before patient information is interoperable and readily available at the point of care.

Vangent believes that health communities will increasingly be defined by interoperability. As a result, Vangent developed a unique Health Information Exchange (HIE) framework to easily enable the availability of patient information at the point of care.

The Vangent Solution

Vangent’s HIE framework is a comprehensive set of interchangeable technology modules and supporting services that can be configured to meet most unique healthcare connectivity needs. This powerful solution can be used to build a new HIE from the ground up, or enhance the effectiveness of an existing HIE by extending its capabilities with new framework modules. It can be considered an “a la carte” solution that incorporates open source or best-of-breed components that have been optimized for best performance and total cost of ownership (TCO) for each implementation.

The technology framework modules fall into one of the following three categories:

  1. Enabling Category – Provides all the infrastructure and connectivity capabilities needed to transform and move data between different organizations. This category is sometimes considered the “plumbing” of the system that is always needed but rarely visible.
  2. User Interface Category – Provides the views into the information being exchanged. Functional-rich views go a long way to ensure that the healthcare professionals using the system derive immediate benefit and as a result assure a successful implementation.
  3. Smart HIE Category – Provides the added value over and above the ability to exchange and view health information. The added Smart HIE Modules typically further process the information being exchanged in some way, such as segmenting the patient population based on defined criteria for further analysis.

Benefits

Vangent’s HIE Framework is unique in that it doesn’t lock an organization into one technology or one vendor but provides a functionally rich, flexible solution that is specifically designed for each implementation.

  • Additional functionality can be deployed as the need grows—an organization can start with basic connectivity and grow into a full-featured Smart HIE.
  • Vangent’s HIE Framework solution includes a Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) gateway and adapters for seamless integration with other NHIN partners.
  • Vangent also provides a full suite of services—consulting, implementation, governance, and operation services—offering the customer a single point of contact for all HIE-related issues.

There are many different organizations or edge systems that would potentially utilize Vangent’s HIE Framework through direct deployment or as a partner accessing the information. These include patients, providers, EHR systems, PHR systems, other HIEs, NHIN partners, and any other healthcare enterprise systems.
